Like most Greek cities, Thessaloniki has a long and <b>rich history<\/b>. It was founded by Kassandros in 316-315 B.C. who was a general of <b>Alexander the Great<\/b>. Thessaloniki owes its name to <b>Kassandro&#8217;s<\/b> wife and half-sister of Alexander the Great.<\/p><p>In the <b>2nd century\u00a0 B.C<\/b>. the first walls were built around the city in order to protect it from its enemies. Nevertheless, Thessaloniki was conquered by the <b>Romans <\/b>while the Kingdom of Macedonia was destroyed. Many of today\u2019s attractions such as the <b>Rotonda<\/b>, the Gallerius Arch and the Roman market belong to Roman times.<\/p><p>Its strategic location made Thessaloniki a key <b>financial<\/b> and commercial center, while its <b>port <\/b>also played a very important role. The city\u2019s <b>citadel <\/b>was completed in 55\u00a0 B.C.<\/p><h2>Christianity in Thessaloniki<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Apostle Paul<\/span><\/span>\u00a0brought Christianity in Thessaloniki around 50 A.D. Thessaloniki welcomed the Apostle Paul warmer than Athens but it took about 4 hundred years to complete the first Christian church, <b>Agios Dimitrios<\/b>. The large basilica of Agios Dimitrios, with its exceptional <b>catacombs<\/b>, survives to this day, while it took its name from the patron saint of the city. Many <b>monuments <\/b>of the Byzantine era are preserved to this day. During this time the city was attacked by Slavs, Saracens and Bulgarians. Apart from the external attacks, Thessaloniki suffered severe damage from the <b>earthquake <\/b>of 620 A.D. A large part of the city&#8217;s population were Jews and of course Muslims. As a result, many Christian Orthodox <b>churches <\/b>were converted into mosques since the Greek population decreased.<\/p><p>During Ottoman rule, the <b>White Tower<\/b>, the current symbol of the city, was built. This is a paradox since it was used by the Ottomans as a prison and was called the Red Tower. The few buildings that survived the disaster were those made of <b>stone<\/b>. Mosques and baths as well as various <b>Ottoman <\/b>buildings of the Upper City are preserved to this day and many of them can be <b>visited<\/b>.<\/p><p>After the big fire, a quarter of the city&#8217;s population, mostly Jews, were left <b>without residence<\/b>. Specifically these are:<\/p><p><u>The Byzantine <b>Walls<\/b>:<\/u> The Walls of Thessaloniki were originally built in the <b>2nd <\/b>century B.C. Several times they had to be rebuilt and repaired by the Romans as well as the <b>Byzantines <\/b>and the Ottomans.<\/p><p>The total length of the walls reached a total of 8 km, but only about <b>half <\/b>of them have been saved. Inside the walls is the <b>Eptapyrgio<\/b>, which was used as a prison until 1989. Today it is <b>open <\/b>to the public as a museum &#8211; archaeological site and often hosts <b>exhibitions <\/b>and cultural activities. The <b>basilica <\/b>also suffered significant damage in the Great Fire in 1917, but managed to survive. Several of the fifth century <b>mosaics <\/b>still adorn the magnificent church dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Agios Dimitrios. The <b>crypt <\/b>also functions as a museum, exhibition space, where sculptures, capitals and vases from the various phases of the temple&#8217;s history are exhibited.<\/p><p><u>The Rotonda of Thessaloniki:<\/u> The <b>Rotonda<\/b>, which relatively recently opened to the general public, was built by the <b>Romans <\/b>around 304 A.D. and was later expanded and functioned as a Christian church. Although a part of it was destroyed in the earthquake of 620 AD. many of the <b>original <\/b>mosaics are preserved and give us a sense of the original image of the temple. It is <b>worth <\/b>visiting Rotonda for its excellent <b>acoustics<\/b>.
