History of Vourvourou

The area of Vourvourou has been mentioned since the 10th century, when it was given to the Xenophontos monastery of Agion Oros, from the Byzantines.

Later, Vourvourou was inhabited by the people of Agios Nikolaos. They sent away the Russian monks who owned the place and became the rulers of the place.

In 1913, the cruelty of the Bulgarians against the people of northern Greece led some of them to leave their homes and search for safer places to live.

People from Serres, Amphipolis, Paliokomi and Lakovikia went to Vourvourou and settled there. However, a cholera epidemic sent them back to their homelands and Vourvourou remained in the hands of the people of Agios Nikolaos.
